The Retired Teacher They Used and Discarded My Daughter's Betrayal

My daughter and her husband were too busy with work, so they asked me to come help look after my two-year-old grandson. The pay was a thousand dollars a month.

That afternoon, Harvey Abbott threw a tantrum because he wanted to ride one of those coin-operated kiddie rides outside the grocery store. I didn't have any cash on me and couldn't figure out how to use the phone payment thing, so I fished out the five-dollar bill from his bib—the one I'd tucked in there earlier to keep him entertained.

When he got bored of the ride, I slipped the leftover dollar coin into my pocket without thinking.
