Two Coffees, Twenty Thousand Dollars, and a Son I Never Had
What is at stake
I took my girlfriend to the café downstairs from our apartment building and ordered two coffees. When it came time to pay, the clerk behind the counter swiped twenty thousand dollars straight off my card.
I stared at the receipt in disbelief:
“Two coffees, and you charged me twenty grand?”
The clerk smiled politely:“Mr. Henson, the two coffees come to a hundred dollars. The rest covers your son's outstanding tab. He brought his entire class here over the weekend and said you'd settle the bill.”
My mind went blank.
