Chapter 3
Bethany booked a Japanese restaurant.
This was my favorite restaurant. I'd brought Ethan here many times, and we'd promised to keep eating here until we grew old.
As Bethany walked inside, she told me, "This is the first restaurant Ethan brought me to. After eating here once, I fell in love with it. We come here often."
She sat down, and Ethan and their son Zachary naturally sat beside her.
Ethan's gaze still occasionally fell on me. He seemed afraid I might say something.
I lowered my head and took a sip of tea, but my hand was shaking. Bethany added me on SnapChat and chatted warmly with me.
She seemed to intentionally or unintentionally show off their affection in front of me—asking Ethan to serve her food one moment, then leaning on his shoulder the next.
Ethan cooperatively and attentively peeled shrimp and placed them on her plate.
I remembered him saying he was allergic to seafood and didn't like it, so I, who grew up by the sea, stopped eating seafood too.
I suddenly realized Ethan and I hadn't eaten together like this in a very long time.
He was busy every day, so busy we rarely even saw each other.
In the past year or two, he said he was staying at the company, so we'd be living together much later.
Just then, Bethany looked up and asked me, "Joanna, why haven't you and your boyfriend gotten married after dating for eight years?"
I raised my head and met Ethan's gaze.
"He said he wants to wait until his career is stable before starting a family."
Those were Ethan's exact words.
He built his business from scratch—the entire company was something he fought for himself. I understood how hard he worked and believed in our relationship, so I never brought up marriage.
Who would have thought he'd already been married for four years behind my back?
Bethany's face glowed with happiness. "Ethan and I got married so fast. The day after I told him I was pregnant, he ordered a ring and proposed to me."
I suddenly felt like all my understanding before had been a joke.
"That's enough." Ethan suddenly spoke, his voice somewhat stiff. "Stop talking."
Bethany froze, then pouted pitifully. "You're being mean to me..."
Ethan sighed and ruffled her hair. "I'm not being mean to you. Just eat."
Watching this scene, I suddenly felt my stomach churning.
