My Mate Let Our Baby Die

Chapter 3

2,358 words

Caleb was silent for a moment. I thought that this time, he would finally agree to send me to the hospital.

But then, his cold, mocking voice came through the phone. “Ryan, who gave you the nerve to defy my orders? Have you started lying for her, too? What did she offer you?”

“Alpha! I’m not lying! The Luna has lost a lot of blood, she’s incredibly weak, and she needs a doctor now! Look, if you don’t believe me!” Ryan yelled, desperate.

He was about to point the phone at me, but just then, I heard a cheer from Caleb’s end. “Miss Serena has given birth! It’s a healthy pup! This is wonderful!”

Caleb completely forgot about Ryan. He was so excited, he didn’t even hang up the phone.

I could hear the fragmented chatter in the background:

“Look at the Alpha, he cares so much for Serena and her pup… He held her hand the whole time… when the pup was born, he was so happy he almost cried. If you didn’t know better, you’d think he was the father…”

“Yeah, he definitely cares more about them than the Luna.”

And then I heard Caleb, acting like Serena’s devoted mate, comforting her gently. “Serena, I swear, I will love this child as my own.”

“He will want for nothing and hold the same status as a trueborn heir of this pack.”

I listened to it all, listening to my mate celebrate another woman and her child while the little lives inside me faded away.

My own heart seemed to die in that moment.

“It’s okay. You can hang up now,” I whispered.

I no longer hoped Caleb would remember me or our children. I turned my pleading eyes to Ryan. “Ryan, please… take me to the hospital. Not for me. For my children… please.”

Ryan looked at me, covered in blood, his eyes filled with pity and conflict.

He gritted his teeth and finally decided to defy his Alpha again. “Okay, Luna. I’ll take you.”

As Ryan turned to get the car ready, I pushed myself up, using the wall for support.

I looked around the manor I had lived in for five years. I once thought it was my home, but now it felt like a cold tomb.

I grabbed the lighter from the table and set the curtains ablaze.

The flames shot up, consuming the wedding portrait of Caleb and me that hung on the wall.

Just like my love for him, it all turned to ash.

“Luna! What are you doing?!” Ryan cried out.

I watched the roaring fire and said softly, “I never want to see this place again. And I’m never coming back.”
